The Henri Poincaré Prize 2000 was awarded to Walter Thirring
for his lifetime achievements in many areas of
mathematical physics, including quantum field theory, atomic physics,
quantum mechanics, relativity theory, and statistical physics. His
influence on the field has been far reaching and his work represents
the highest ideals of important mathematics in combination with
important physical problems.
