The Henri Poincaré Prize 2003 was awarded to Huzihiro Araki for his
lifetime contributions to the foundations of quantum field theory,
quantum statistical mechanics and the theory of operator algebras. His
outstanding achievements at this interface of physics and mathematics
are exemplified by his work on the structure of the algebra of local
observables and its representations, collision theory, the variational
principle in statistical mechanics and the notion of relative entropy
for infinite quantum systems.
